Growing the Next Generation of High-Performance Materials

For decades, formulation industries – companies blending raw ingredients into everyday consumer and commercial products – faced a tough compromise: choosing sustainable materials meant accepting lower performance or higher costs. While the bio-based materials market is projected to top $200 billion by 2030, scaling high-purity biopolymers affordably remains a major bottleneck.

Vancouver-based Tydra Labs is stepping into this supply void with a solution engineered to dismantle that compromise once and for all.

Instead of asking brands to trade performance for sustainability, Tydra uses advanced bioprocessing to produce a never-dried, fibrillated chitin ingredient that outperforms synthetic incumbents at lower cost. By converting natural bio-byproducts into high-performance biopolymers, Tydra proves that sustainable materials can be superior, scalable, and economical.

An independent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) confirms Tydra’s process slashes climate impact by 34× compared to traditional chitin extraction. Generating just 2.97 kg CO₂eq per kg of material, the technology will save an estimated 180 million liters of freshwater annually at commercial scale, completely eliminating the harsh acids and bases that are standard in conventional processing.

Scaling the Science

What They’ve Done: Tydra Labs engineered a proprietary bioprocess platform that isolates fibrillated chitin while preserving its native structural integrity, a feat traditional chemical extraction can’t match. This structure gives their drop-in material superior strength, barrier protection, and natural antimicrobial properties. 

That technical advantage has driven strong market traction, securing 25+ Letters of Intent (LOIs) and 15+ Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) across personal care, food preservation, and agriculture. Tydra has scaled to kilogram-level pilot batches, raised over $1.2M backed by Spring Impact Capital and strategic investors, and earned top honors like Startupfest’s $100K Women in Tech Investment Prize, People’s Choice at Climate Solutions, and first place at Plus One EcoOdyssey.

Why NVBC: Progressing through the 2026 New Ventures BC Competition, presented by Innovate BC, gave Tydra’s founders the ideal environment to stress-test their growth plan. Feedback from veteran mentors and judges helped the team sharpen their value proposition, prove out their unit economics, and lock in personal care as their primary go-to-market focus.

Up Next: Tydra Labs is focused on transitioning from pilot-scale validation to active commercial deployment. The team is building out a dedicated pilot facility to reach a 500 kg production milestone, enabling them to fulfill volume requirements for initial cosmetic brand partners. These pilot benchmarks, combined with regulatory filings for secondary verticals in food preservation and agriculture, lay the groundwork for a planned Series A round in 2027.

Recognizing that navigating multi-industry regulatory frameworks and fragmented sales cycles at the early pilot stage risks diluting execution, the founders made the strategic decision to narrow their immediate go-to-market focus strictly to high-margin cosmetics and personal care.

In personal care, regulatory pathways are streamlined, formulation demand for clean multi-functional ingredients is urgent, and low unit-volume requirements yield exceptional margins. By establishing a defensible commercial beachhead in personal care first, Tydra can build the financial and operational scale required to sequentially deploy its biopolymer platform into broader agricultural and industrial markets.
