The future of insulated gear is natural
Baerfell is reimagining insulation for the outdoor industry—with a cleaner, greener twist. The startup is developing high-performance, bio-based insulation as a sustainable alternative to synthetic and animal-derived materials used in jackets, sleeping bags, and cold-chain packaging. Their goal: help outdoor lovers enjoy nature without harming it.
The problem they’re tackling is massive. The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global CO₂ emissions—more than the aviation and shipping sectors combined. Most textiles are petroleum-based and riddled with harmful chemicals that release microplastics and “forever chemicals” into the environment.
Baerfell’s insulation is made from non-food agricultural fibres using green chemistry to produce a bio-based aerogel. It’s lighter and warmer than conventional materials, and it’s also waterproof, washable, and free of PFAS. By avoiding petroleum-based inputs and toxic chemicals, the company offers a lower-impact option for cold-weather gear.
Insulation Sensation
What They’ve Done: Baerfell has made major strides in both R&D and real-world validation. They’ve developed a washable insulation that’s free of plastic and PFAS—a key technical breakthrough in sustainable materials. Scaled production trials have been completed with a local manufacturing partner, and early validation has come from collaborators in apparel, outdoor gear, and cold-chain packaging. The team has also prototyped winter mitts with a local outerwear company.
Why NVBC: The cleantech startup’s primary goals are to refine their business model, gain exposure, and connect with mentors, investors, and partners. The competition aligns with their mission to grow a cleantech venture that supports the circular economy and replaces petroleum- and animal-based insulation across industries.
Up Next: Baerfell is focused on scaling production and co-developing prototypes with strategic partners. In-field testing and third-party certification for performance and sustainability are key priorities, along with expanding their research and business teams.
The Startup Timing Trap
One of Baerfell’s biggest challenges has been navigating the in-between stage of startup life—too early for some opportunities, too late for others. Like many deep tech ventures, their timeline doesn’t match the typical growth expectations of funding programs or accelerators. With a small team and a science-first approach, they’ve chosen to focus on advancing the technology, building traction, and staying patient. In materials science, progress doesn’t always happen overnight.
