The Micromobility Experience Gap
For anyone who has rented an e-bike or e-scooter in a scenic tourist destination or bustling city, the sequence is intimately familiar. You download an app, fill out a profile, sign waivers, and enter your credit card. Yet, the moment you unlock the vehicle, the high-tech veneer drops away. Suddenly, you’re trying to steady a phone in one hand while steering, or navigating via an out-of-date paper map.
The shared micromobility sector is expanding rapidly, with North American riders logging over 150 million trips on shared bikes and scooters annually according to the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO). However, this explosive growth masks a deep operational inefficiency. Shared fleets frequently suffer from utilization bottlenecks, with idle vehicles sitting unused for massive windows, while a significant portion of fleets can sit out of service due to maintenance blind spots. The industry has invested billions of dollars making hardware available, but has spent surprisingly little time optimizing what happens after the rider actually pushes off the curb.
This glaring disconnect between premium hardware and a disjointed ride experience is what led to the creation of Vancouver-based CYKEL Technologies.
Born from a frustrating rental encounter where onboarding software felt light-years ahead of the actual ride navigation, the startup is redefining how micromobility operations interact with customers. Instead of treating an e-bike as a mere utility, CYKEL turns it into a gateway for local discovery. The company’s patented hardware adapter seamlessly retrofits onto legacy fleets, instantly upgrading non-connected vehicles into smart assets. By pairing this hardware with intuitive management software and curated rider journeys, CYKEL allows operators to access real-time data, automate tracking, reduce operational costs, and boost vehicle utilization all from one centralized platform.
Entering a Growth CYKEL
What They’ve Done: CYKEL has successfully transitioned from a standalone hardware concept into a comprehensive, multi-tiered micromobility platform. The startup has deployed real-world pilot programs across Vancouver, putting its connected hardware and guided software experiences directly into the hands of daily riders. These initial deployments validated their engagement models, proving that interactive, curated routes directly drive longer ride times and higher fleet utilization. Furthermore, the team has accelerated product development by leveraging non-dilutive funding, strategic partnerships, and regional industry support programs, allowing them to scale engineering milestones while preserving equity.
Why NVBC: The 2026 New Ventures BC Competition, presented by Innovate BC, has given the founding team the unique opportunity to rediscover their company from the ground up. In the chaotic daily grind of managing product development, it’s incredibly easy for founders to become hyper-focused on isolated operational tasks. The competition forced them to step back and thoroughly revisit their core fundamentals—their mission, market opportunity, and value proposition. Condensing a multi-faceted business model into a concise, five-page narrative sharply distilled their messaging, fundamentally improving how they pitch to investors, close cross-border partners, and onboard new team members.
Up Next: The immediate roadmap centres on aggressive geographic expansion across the North American hospitality, tourism, and rental markets. CYKEL is targeting 60 primary operators across Canada and the United States, focusing heavily on warm-weather climates that boast year-round rental seasons. Reaching this deployment milestone will place more than 600 connected vehicles on the market, generating tens of thousands of premium rider experiences. By the end of 2026, the team aims to establish a highly repeatable blueprint that demonstrates clear, measurable increases in operator revenue and rider engagement.
Creating Seamless Exploration
The team at CYKEL quickly uncovered a reality that frequently trips up early-stage founders: customers rarely buy the exact solution you set out to build. The venture was initially conceptualized as a consumer-facing application built strictly for individual riders. However, by listening to operators in the field, the founders realized their software was merely one piece of a much larger operational puzzle. Frontline businesses were actively struggling with a lack of vehicle tracking, high manual friction during check-ins, and low guest retention. By remaining flexible, they transformed a narrow consumer app into a holistic B2B2C infrastructure platform.
Looking ahead, CYKEL’s vision is to entirely dissolve the boundary between physical transportation and curated experiences. Instead of treating transit as an isolated chore, the startup envisions a seamless ecosystem where users open a single app to find optimized mobility options intrinsically woven together with local recommendations, community events, and hidden attractions. By turning routine rides into memorable journeys, CYKEL aims to curb urban gridlock, fuel local storefronts, and maximize the utility of existing fleets.
