The following blog post was written by Alice Lam and was published earlier this week on BCIC’s blog as part of a series profiling BCIC-NewVentures Competition: Regional Top 20 Finalists.

Here’s another profile of a top 20 finalist that made it this far in the BCIC-New Ventures Competition: Regional and will be working hard over the next few weeks to perfect their final pitch before presenting to the panel of experts made up of VCs, financiers and angel investors.

Spawned from their existing business, the Angler’s Atlas, Map Jungle emerged as a new business opportunity and a solution to the challenges of working with large databases of lakes, maps and other geographic data. To make searching and organizing geographic data easier, Map Jungle is an online search platform that captures geographic information using the company’s innovative cataloguing technology. Map Jungle allows clients to organize and share maps, GPS points, GIS Data and geo-tagged photos, creating an easy-to-manage catalogue of geographic information.

“As a technology company based in Prince George, we have limited access to business leaders in our field,” said Sean Simmons, Founder of Map Jungle. “The BCIC-New Ventures Competition: Regional has provided us with external feedback that we would not hear otherwise, allowing us to better understand the areas that need improvement, while also confirming our opportunity.”

Over the short term, Map Jungle hopes to get their product into market trials leveraging the existing business of the Angler’s Atlas. “Over the long term, we want to move into the consumer sector with Map Jungle, providing online map services to this growing base,” added Simmons.

Congratulations to Map Jungle, we wish you the best of luck in the last round of the competition! Winners of the BCIC-NVC: Regional will be announced on February 24, 2011 in Kelowna, BC. Stay tuned!
