Mal Grewal and Bryant Pike of Ernst & Young covered Basic Finance for Startups and Steven Forth of Rocket Builders tackled Choosing a Business Model.

Choosing a Business Model with Steven Forth:

Building on the momentum of the April GTEx Forum, the May event will be an extension of the energy distribution and storage topic plus finding effective ways to integrate smart technologies for distributed microgrids.

Victor Goncalves, from Alpha Technologies Ltd, will present a case study on an innovative design for integrating distributed power modules. Alpha has teamed up with Corvus Energy to develop an Energy Management System (EMS) for a Network of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and Li-Ion batteries to demonstrate that stored energy can be used to reduce energy flow from BC Hydro during peak demand periods. This project is part of the continuing UBC Living Lab initiative for demonstrating industry-university collaboration.

The GTEx Forum takes place at Harbour Centre, Simon Fraser University. Networking begins at 5:00pm with the presentation at 6:00pm. Register online to attend.

The Funding Roadshow is designed to give entrepreneurs across Canada the opportunity to pitch to a panel of funders. Moreover Fundica aims to better educate entrepreneurs on funding opportunities, and facilitate connections to sources of funding.

“We need to make it easier for entrepreneurs to learn about funding and get funded both online and in face-to-face settings” said Fundica CEO Mike Lee. “What better way is there to do this than in front of a team of serious funders?”

The events will allow 180 entrepreneurs to pitch their business ideas to a panel of government and private sector funders in each city. 30 entrepreneurs will pitch per city for five minutes at a time with an extended question and answer period.

Fundica is urging entrepreneurs and funders to visit their website to register. Entrepreneurs must be running an SME or a startup and it must have a strong technical component to it as well as a desire to grow over 50 percent over the next year. They must also submit their presentation and an executive summary to Fundica. The deadline for submissions is May 20.

The Funding Roadshow will be in Vancouver on May 24th.

Among this year’s finalists are 2011 Vancity Social Venture Prize winner FundRazr in the Most Promising Startup category.

BCTIA says the 2013 finalists “reaffirm British Columbia’s status as innovators” in a cross-section of technologies including enterprise software, telecommunications, hardware, biotechnology and nanotechnology.

Winners will be announced on June 6 at the 20th Anniversary of the Technology Impact Awards Gala, to be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre-West Building.
