On Wednesday, June 26th this year’s Top 25 companies will meet their mentors in-person at the annual Meet Your Mentor networking event. This event is for our top 25 companies to meet their mentors in-person, but it’s also a great general networking event.

If you’d like to reconnect with the New Ventures community, please join us. Hors d’oeuvres and your first drink provided.

The BCIC-New Ventures Meet your Mentor Networking Event takes place on June 26th from 5:30pm-7:30pm at the offices of Fasken Martineau.

It is free for all 2013 competitors, volunteers, and sponsors but $20 for general admission tickets (and $10 for students). Register online to attend.

GRAND NCE Host Workshop on Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The Graphics, Animation and New Media Network of Centres of Excellence (GRAND) is holding a workshop at SFU on August 15th on Emerging Digital Media Technologies, Methodologies and Practices: Developer Solutions, Industry Needs and Approaches to Collaboration.

The workshop promises to provide a forum for the communication of research results and highlight the development of innovative graphics, animations and new digital media emerging from Canada’s research universities. In addition, the workshop offers industry an opportunity to network with researchers and a platform for future collaboration on key graphic, animation and digital media problems and needs.Attend the workshop if your are interested in:

Gaining access to the latest digital media technologies;
Working with an university or industry partner on a specific business or research problem;
Starting a new digital media venture/start-up that builds on innovative and lead-edge gaming, animation, simulation and new media technologies;
Obtaining information on funding and/or business and investment support through GRAND and other public and private sources;
Networking with universities and/or national digital media specialists;
Accessing university entrepreneurship incubators;
Identifying future digital media employees and/or consultants;
Understanding the IP transfer process;

GreenTech Exchange Hosts Expert Panel on Bioenergy and Agriculture

The next GreenTech Exchange Forum will be held on Wednesday, June 26th in Vancouver and the topic is “Harmonizing Energy and Food”.

While we all experience the metabolism of energy from food, the use of biomass to convert energy in the agriculture system is growing. The useful applications of bioenergy truly enable basic elements to come full circle.

British Columbia has a diverse suite of biotechnology initiatives that is fostering innovative pathways for a Bioeconomy. Demonstration projects such as anaerobic digesters reduce greenhouse gas emissions, generate effective fertilizers and lower food waste in landfills. Biomass and chemical R&D is leading to novel biorefining processes and enhanced wastewater treatment.

In the June 2013 GreenTech Exchange (GTEx) Forum, a panel of bioenergy experts will discuss agriculture in a whole new light and share insights on drivers and barriers with technology adoption, selective showcase of key projects in BC and opportunities in the short and long term.

FundRazr Wins 2013 Technology Impact Award for Most Promising Startup

Last night the BCTIA announced the winners of the 2013 Technology Impact Awards and our 2011 Vancity Social Venture prize winner was recognized as the Most Promising Startup.

Entrepreneur Warren Roy, founder of Global Relay, earned top honour as Person of the Year, while the recently acquired Layer 7 Technologies was recognized as Company of the Year.

“Layer 7 and Global Relay exemplify the world-class companies that we are creating here in BC,” stated BCTIA President and CEO Bill Tam.

Roy’s Global Relay won an award for Community Engagement, while Vancouver-based QuickMobile snagged Emerging Company of the Year.

PMC won Excellence in Product Innovation; OpenRoad Communications and Transportation Investment tied for the Adoption of Technology award; Most Promising Pre-Commercial Technology went to Nanotech Security; FundRazr was recognized as most promising startup; and Land Title and Survey Authority of BC won Team of the Year.
