The New Ventures BC competition was initiated by Wal van Lierop and was developed and advanced by founding sponsor, SFU Business. The competition was created with the aims of:

• Stimulating employment and wealth creation;
• Attracting venture capital to British Columbia;
• Motivating researchers and developers to commercialize their ideas;
• Building business skills by bringing entrepreneurs together;
• Creating a diverse investment community by increasing the supply of venture proposals;
• Identifying service providers to support initiatives; and
• Facilitating networking opportunities and access to a supporting infrastructure.
